Southern Fried Cabbage

If you grew up in the South or ever had a proper Southern-style meal, then you already know just how comforting a big skillet of fried cabbage can be. This Southern Fried Cabbage is simple, flavorful, and makes the perfect side dish or even a light main when you’re craving something warm and homey.

What makes this recipe so special is the bacon. That smoky flavor paired with buttery cabbage, tender onions, and sweet peppers creates a dish that feels like it came straight from grandma’s kitchen. I’ve made this so many times, and it’s one of those recipes that always brings people back for seconds.

Ingredients

  • 4 to 6 slices of bacon, cooked until crisp
  • 2 tablespoons bacon drippings
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium sweet green pepper, chopped (or use a mix of red and green)
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 small head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cajun seasoning (optional)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • A sprinkle of paprika for finishing

Instructions

Start by frying the bacon until it’s nice and crisp. Set it aside on a paper towel to drain, and try not to snack on too much of it while the cabbage cooks (I always sneak a piece). Keep about 2 tablespoons of the bacon drippings in the skillet—this is where the flavor begins.

Add the butter to the drippings and let it melt. Toss in the chopped onion, peppers, and garlic. Let everything cook for a few minutes until the veggies start to soften and your kitchen smells amazing.

Next, add in the chopped cabbage, salt, black pepper, Cajun seasoning if you’re using it, and pour in the chicken broth. Give it a good stir, then cover the pan and let it simmer on medium-low heat for about 15 to 20 minutes. I like my cabbage nice and tender, but if you prefer a little crunch, check it at around the 10- to 12-minute mark.

Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, remove it from the heat. Crumble the crispy bacon over the top and finish with a light sprinkle of paprika.

Tips and Serving Ideas

This dish is wonderful served alongside cornbread, pork chops, or even just on its own with a side of rice. If you’re vegetarian, you can skip the bacon and use just butter or olive oil—it’ll still taste great.

Southern Fried Cabbage is a simple dish, but it brings a whole lot of comfort to the table. It’s the kind of recipe that turns basic ingredients into something special. I hope it brings a little Southern warmth to your kitchen the way it does to mine.
