Ingredients

  • 8-10 lbs of apples (any variety or a mix)
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider (or water)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1½ teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • Optional: Adjust spices to taste for preferred sweetness and spice level

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples:
Peel, core, and chop 8-10 lbs of apples into small pieces.
  2. Combine Ingredients:
Place the apples in your pot or crockpot. Add 2 cups of brown sugar, 2 cups of white sugar, 1 cup of apple cider (or water), 2 teaspoons of vanilla, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 1½ teaspoons of nutmeg, and 2 teaspoons of salt.
  3. Cook the Apple Mixture:
If using a slow cooker, set it on low and cook for 8-10 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. For the stovetop method, simmer over low heat for 3-4 hours, stirring frequently. The apples should become soft and the mixture will thicken.
  4. Blend to Smooth:
Once the apples have broken down and the mixture has thickened, use an immersion blender to puree the apple butter until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the mixture to a blender in batches.
  5. Adjust Seasoning:
Taste and adjust spices as needed. You may want to add more cinnamon or sugar depending on your preference.
  6. Can the Apple Butter:
To preserve, ladle the apple butter into sterilized jars, leaving about ¼ inch of space at the top. Seal the jars and process them in a hot water bath for 10 minutes.
  7. Enjoy:
Store your apple butter in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in sealed jars for up to a year.

Notes

  • For a deeper flavor, use a mix of sweet and tart apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp.
  • If you prefer a chunkier texture, skip the blending step.
  • Adjust the sugar based on the sweetness of your apples.
